Trapped In The Slaughterhouse

Listen to a reading of this article:

Western civilization is a story of full bellies and starving hearts. Of a feast of information and a famine of truth. Of conveyor belts churning out processed food, conformity-enforcing media and power-serving culture. Enough food to stay alive but not enough sustenance to live.

They keep us alive but they don’t let us live. They give us enough carbohydrate to turn the gears of industry, but they keep us too busy, poor, propagandized, confused and crazy to actually drink from the waters of life. To actually experience the beauty of this world. To let the crackling potentiality of advanced terrestrial life blossom to fruition within us.

The modern empire rules us by filling our markets with Wonder Bread and our schools and media with lies. By filling our bellies and starving our souls. By churning out mountains of useless landfill without ever producing anything of real value. By making more while providing less.

They improve food production and medicine just enough to lengthen our lifespans, only so that they have more life to drain us of. They let us populate the earth with more humans only to drain us of our humanity.

We’re not people to them. We are batteries. We are fuel.

This is no civilization. It’s a slaughterhouse. A fake plastic performance staged to funnel human life into the gears of an insatiable machine. A fake plastic culture designed to keep us on the conveyor belt so that our life force can be converted into fuel for a soulless empire. A fake plastic society built to keep us marching into the food processor.

There are so very many more of us than there are of them. We could crush them like an insect the moment we decided to. But the brainwashing is so very, very effective, and the matrix hallucination seems so very, very real. Our propaganda-induced coma keeps us fueling the machine.

Not until we awaken ourselves from the coma will our adventure on this planet really begin. Not until we can unplug our minds from the empire’s life-siphoning control mechanisms we can begin to really live.

We’ll either wake each other up, or we’ll remain trapped in the slaughterhouse.

In The US You Can’t Witness An Execution If Your Skirt Is Too Revealing

Listen to a reading of this article:

Joe Nathan James Jr was executed by lethal injection on Thursday, against the wishes of his victim’s family. He was the eighth person to be put to death in the United States so far this year, and the second from Alabama.

In the moments leading up to his gruesome murder by the state, a news reporter was forced to change her outfit by the Alabama Department of Corrections, because her skirt and her open-toe high-heeled shoes were considered too revealing.

Yes, while a man was being strapped down to meet his end in the world’s largest prison system at the hands of a governmental institution designed to serve power rather than justice, Ivana Shatara’s skirt and shoes were deemed by authorities to be the most offensive thing going on in that moment.

And it was arguably the most American thing that has ever happened.

This is the backwater cowboy theocracy that we are all currently preparing to fight a third world war for. This is the knuckle-dragging puritanical regime who rules our planet.

A place where a tiny bit of skin is more of a problem than injecting a Black man with poison in a judicial system that turns the poor into slaves while not even recognizing the crimes of the wealthy.

A place where conservative modesty is a higher value than refraining from state-mandated murder.

A place where the dress code is more important than human life.

Come on, Ivana, this is an execution not Mardi Gras.

Come on, Ivana, you’re dressed like a hooker instead of a witness to a modern-day stoning.

Cover that skin as you see Joe Nathan James Jr poisoned to death by your government; don’t you know Jesus is watching you?

How can you expect to get into Heaven when you can’t even dress properly to watch us choke the life out of a man’s eyes?

Let us all dress like proper servants of the Lord while we execute and enslave those who our systems have failed.

Let us all dress like proper servants of the Lord while funneling impoverished communities into the largest prison population in the history of civilization.

Let us all dress like proper servants of the Lord while turning the gears of industry for God and country.

Let us all dress like proper servants of the Lord while we prepare to show Russia and China what real violence looks like.

Let us dress like proper servants of the Lord while we ride that ICBM straight into Beijing, waving our cowboy hats and giving them commies a taste of that old rebel yell.

Let us all dress like proper servants of the Lord as we march with unquestioning faith into the sweet welcoming embrace of mass extinction.

Let us all dress like proper servants of the Lord as we abandon our humanity and march to the drumbeat of money and empire over the edge and into the loving arms of oblivion.

Let us all become American, with prudish moralism and private porn addictions, with Bibles in our hands and murder in our eyes, with indoctrinated minds and calloused hearts, with proper attire at our executions and pious abandon at our extincion.

Joe Nathan James Jr, I witness your execution, even while the people around you are arguing about open-toed high heels in your final moments.

Joe Nathan James Jr, I see you, even while your death is eclipsed by the madness of our day.

Joe Nathan James Jr, I am so sorry for everything.

I can only promise you that those of us who go on living will keep trying to make things right as best we can.

Clinic Defense in the Era of Operation Rescue

Long-time anarchist organizer Suzy Subways discusses the struggle against Operation Rescue and the lessons it leaves us with today in a post-Roe world. Originally posted to Hard Crackers. Listen to an interview with Suzy Subways on IGD here.

In the early ’90s, anarchists and other feminists defended clinics with our bodies and taught each other how to do abortion techniques such as menstrual extraction safely. As the Christian Right bombed hundreds of clinics, killed health care providers and patients, and mobilized its base to swarm clinics and shut them down, grassroots reproductive freedom activists stood against this terror, building a powerful and exciting movement. But liberal feminist nonprofits rejected this grassroots mass movement, choosing to rely on the police and courts for protection. Since then, the Christian Right has continued to attack and harass people at clinics, mobilizing its own grassroots activists to shame people getting health care and shut down clinics one by one. Their local, bottom-up strategy took the long view and is now winning at the highest levels of government. If today’s movement for reproductive freedom is to win, it must return to the grassroots.

The militant anti-abortion group Operation Rescue was founded in 1986 to mobilize thousands of people to physically block and shut down clinics across the country. This well-funded and well-staffed organization presented an image of the Christian Right as peaceful activists guided by a deep moral outrage, although some of its leaders had signed a pledge defending the assassination of abortion providers and were active in the right-wing militia movement. Reproductive freedom activists, led by people with the capacity to get pregnant, mobilized to protect clinics with our bodies. On the ground, Operation Rescue was aggressive, and sometimes the space in front of clinics erupted into hand-to-hand combat as anti-abortion activists shoved people and tried to crawl through their legs.

Clinic Defense: Using Our Bodies to Protect Our Lifesaving Spaces

I did clinic defense a few times, when I was 18 and 19. As a student at Antioch College in 1992, I went to Columbus, Ohio with some friends on a few Saturdays. We’d wake up super early and stand in formation in front of the clinic with dozens of others to protect it. We saw these health centers as precious places. People going through trauma after sexual assault and through abusive relationships, very young people, and married women trying to keep their lives from getting unmanageable were taking control of their health despite their vulnerability in those moments. As protectors we took our role seriously and we bonded with each other as we stood against the enemy. This was the source of the passion that grew a powerful movement from below.

My dear friend Kathy became a legend at Antioch one day for her response to a vile Christian Right protester who harassed her for hours outside the clinic. Kathy was a hot butch lesbian who grew up on a farm and didn’t take shit, although she was quiet most of the time. This man kept telling her, “You should be married and having children,” until finally, she pulled out her bloody pad, put it in his hand and said, “Put this in your petri dish and grow it!”

This was the vibe at clinic defense. We were taking back our power and control of our bodies, and the energy this ignited in us as a collective body grew exponentially. There’s something about being there when your life-giving space is under attack, being able to defend it successfully, and doing it together. Using our bodies to defend our bodily autonomy.

Operation Rescue targeted my hometown of Philadelphia during the summer of 1993. With at least a hundred people on our side—maybe hundreds—we kept the clinic open. Operation Rescue had about half as many people and stood on the sidewalk across the street. I remember following a crew of badass anarchist lesbians whom I admired around the corner and a few blocks away as they chased a male leader of Operation Rescue, yelling at him and surrounding him. They got in his face, and he cowered. Our power took a visible, audible, unstoppable form: Get out of our town.

Back outside the clinic, I saw a friend on the other side of the street, with the anti-abortion activists. She had been the first to welcome me to my new school when I’d moved to Philly. I felt my face get hot and looked away. I almost felt remorse for the confrontation along with my disappointment. Should I pretend I didn’t see her?

I decided to cross the street and say hi. Sheepishly but warmly, she returned my friendly greeting. It looked like she was there with a church group. A woman standing next to her cast me some snide vibes, saying, “Shouldn’t you be over there?” My friend and I ran out of things to say and I went back, but I felt better knowing she hadn’t rejected me. Decades later, we reconnected on social media, and she is living happily as a lesbian with a wife and kids.

Thinking of that day reminds me of the value of my brilliant, late comrade Joel Olson’s favorite saying, “Peace to the villages—war to the palaces.” A little kindness goes a long way with people we can win over, but we can’t let politeness and decorum get in the way of wielding our power against those who would take our power away.

A Betrayal: Liberal Feminist Nonprofits Tell Defenders to Go Home

In 1995, I moved to New York City and joined Love and Rage Revolutionary Anarchist Federation. In the August/September issue of our national newspaper that year, Laura from Bay Area Coalition for Our Reproductive Rights (BACORR), wrote:

Fight Back Network members from BACORR, Refuse & Resist Minneapolis, and Love and Rage went to LA May 25th-28th to try to keep the clinics open and to blast OR’s efforts to define themselves in the media as non-violent-peaceful-baby-lovin’-Christians. BACORR had been in touch with WAC LA (Women’s Action Coalition) and a Southern California NOW chapter that welcomed our support and involvement.

Unfortunately, the Fund for the Feminist Majority, a national nonprofit, was in charge at the scene. As reported by Laura, the Fund had put a lot of resources into electing Bill Clinton as president and lobbying for a law that passed in 1994 to make it a federal crime to block clinic doors. The Fund had decided to let Operation Rescue and a group calling themselves Missionaries for the Pre-Born shut down the clinics in LA that day, in order to bring the FACE law into the courts as a test case. Laura continued:

Saturday, the day of the hit, hundreds of pro-choicers were at the clinics around LA. Many had followed the OR caravan from its church meeting-point earlier in the morning. The Fund’s “official leaders” made it clear from the get go that they would offer no resistance to OR if they rushed the door, and were depending on the police to move the anti’s away and level federal charges.

In a nutshell, the anti’s were permitted to sit down in front of the doors, creating the image of non-violent anti-abortion protest. They kept the clinic shut down for two hours. The Fund’s main office lied to BACORR and to Palm Springs NOW, who they knew was working with BACORR, about OR’s whereabouts—telling us they had lost the caravan and had no idea where it was. … A local reporter told us that she had interviewed pro-choice people who were standing at the door when the hit went down who were told not to stop the anti’s and to move away from the door.

Operation Rescue got their dream media opportunity, and police beat and injured Laura and a friend after Fund staff told police they had nothing to do with the official pro-choice response. The Fund didn’t alert legal support that Laura and her friend had been arrested, and they implied to the media that the two had deserved it. Operation Rescue and Missionaries for the Pre-Born were arrested gently at their sit-in, creating a widely broadcast spectacle of peacefully praying dissent, but they were never even charged under the FACE law.

How the Christian Right Won

While the Fund and other liberal feminist nonprofits ordered clinic defenders to stop protecting clinics and simply hold a “Keep Abortion Legal” sign on the sidelines, the Christian Right supported and honored its grassroots movement. They energized large numbers of people, and they inspired many, many more who followed their actions. While the pro-choice establishment dismantled our movement, grassroots activists of the Christian Right have never stopped protesting outside clinics. Even in major liberal cities, they harass and shame people who are just trying to get health care. This grassroots, on-site shaming campaign has made abortion something people feel like they need to be ashamed of, feel guilty about, and not talk about—in contrast to the first decade after legalization in the U.S., when people interviewed about their abortions mostly talked about how relieved they felt. This grassroots movement in local areas across the country has grown stronger over the past three decades, getting clinics closed one by one, winning at the state level and now at the national level, proving to us on the Left what we already knew: Power comes from below.

Since the 1990s, any time there’s an upsurge in support of abortion access, it’s been brief and felt kind of abstract. Young people need an inspiring, direct-action movement to jump into with all their heart and their bodies—they won’t be inspired by getting told to carry a sign through the biggest street in their town. Maybe once or twice, but then it dies down. It’s hard to build a base when you’re not at the place where harm is being done and able to stop it, or at the place where lives are being saved and able to protect it.

There’s an honest argument to be made that health clinics should never have to be battlegrounds, that patients in moments of vulnerability shouldn’t have to walk through such a war. But they’ve been walking through a gauntlet of shame all these years anyway, because clinic defenders haven’t been there to shield them from the hate. And in the ’90s, clinic defenders used our creativity and joy as a buffer between patients and attackers. The Church Ladies for Choice brought their drag queen brilliance, and our queer kiss-ins outside right-wing churches freaked out the Christian Right activists to the point they would avoid getting near us.

As a strategy, anarchists and other revolutionaries in the reproductive freedom movement have consistently—as in for more than 50 years—demanded the repeal of all abortion laws. Not more state involvement from the police and courts, but a removal of all state power in our reproductive lives. We call it “reproductive freedom” because it’s about more than abortion. it’s about the history of forced and coerced sterilizations of Black, Latinx, and Native American women and other people with the capacity to bear children. It’s about the population control tactics used against poor people and those who use drugs.

People don’t have the ability to “choose” whether to have a kid or not when wages are too low, childcare is not accessible, and the rent is too damn high. Medicaid hasn’t paid for abortions since the Hyde Amendment in 1977. Giving a baby up for adoption—or being adopted—can be deeply traumatizing, especially under our current, unsupportive system. And it’s worse for children of color adopted by white parents. But “choice” has been our battle cry since the 1980s. Why? This “choice” versus “life” debate has allowed the Christian Right to control the narrative and make it about their idea of morality. It’s been a successful wedge strategy from the Right, dividing people who could be united in coalitions.

Can We Still Win Now?

If the Christian Right won by building their grassroots movement and letting its power grow across the decades, so must we. If our power is strongest at the location of our bodily autonomy—in the places where we are able to exercise our reproductive freedom—then we must build our movement there.

Abortion pills and menstrual extraction (which can be done in our homes by trained people who don’t have to be medical professionals) allow us to take care of ourselves on our own territory. This is our strongest position strategically and what the Right fears most. They are using surveillance by state power and vigilantes to track, hunt down, and punish whoever provides and receives these medications and treatments, because they can’t just rely on hospital and doctors’ records. Every home could be an abortion clinic. It’s a scary situation, but it also makes clear our advantage.

So it seems clear that the reproductive freedom movement’s strategy now is to protect these sites of health care and resistance by building powerful, anti-racist and queer-positive coalitions involving hundreds of thousands of people. We need as many people involved as possible in order to keep the most vulnerable safe and also to make this health care accessible. If it’s limited to those in the know—people who are already activists and people who are able to find out about the support networks they need—that will exclude the people who need it most.

Some of these coalitions and support networks need to be underground, and some need to be above ground. Some need to be sharing information with people who need abortions about how to get abortion pills and what to say if they need to go to the emergency room (“I think I’m having a miscarriage”—don’t mention abortion). Some need to be driving people to appointments, providing emotional support, following up and making sure people are OK. Some need to be talking to the media and educating, agitating, and organizing in our communities and workplaces. Some will need to fundraise for legal support and organize demonstrations in solidarity with reproductive freedom’s new political prisoners. This work is direct action, because you’re meeting a basic human need in defiance of those who’d prefer that we die.

For Warmongers It’s Always 1938: Notes From The Edge Of The Narrative Matrix

Listen to a reading of this article:

Hawks always say our geopolitical situation resembles that of 1938 so that any call for de-escalation, diplomacy or detente can be portrayed as “appeasement”. It’s never 1919, when the conditions which would give rise to World War Two were put in place, or any of the early 20th century years when the trajectory toward World War One could have easily been turned away from.

Our fetishization of World War Two has eclipsed from memory the fact that it was the single worst thing that ever happened on this planet. The trauma it inflicted upon our species still reverberates through our collective consciousness to this day, and avoiding it would have been objectively good.

Even if we fully espouse all the grandiose ego-stroking Anglo-American narratives about WWII, you don’t want to have a modern Churchill and FDR bravely standing against the forces of evil. What you want is for such a stand to be unnecessary, because the conflict was avoided.

But that’s not how you score political points in Washington and London. That’s not how you pull ratings as a news outlet. That’s not how you sell weapons as an arms manufacturer, and it’s not how you advance hegemonic agendas as an empire. That’s why peace doesn’t get a voice.

And, oh yeah, did I mention there are fucking nuclear weapons now? Even the dumbest of warmongers should want to postpone reenacting their favorite Hollywood WWII movies in the modern world, because it’s impossible to win a world war now. Stop buying this “it’s 1938” bullshit. It’s nothing like 1938, and a massive conflict can most definitely be avoided.

Like the Tao Te Ching says:

Prevent trouble before it arises.
Put things in order before they exist.
The giant pine tree
grows from a tiny sprout.
The journey of a thousand miles
starts from beneath your feet.

Or as we say in the west, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

The only thing dumber than the risks our leaders are taking with our world is the reasons why they are taking those risks. It’s not for anything more noble or righteous than the desire to rule the world. Just stupid, garden variety power hunger.

If Ukraine has taught us anything it’s that the US and its allies should definitely stage as many aggressive provocations as possible in Taiwan.

Russia: Don’t cross our red lines in Ukraine or we’ll take action.

US politicians: They’re bluffing. Cross those red lines.

[Russia invades.]

China: Don’t cross our red lines in Taiwan or we’ll take action.

US politicians: They’re bluffing. Cross those red lines.

Can’t believe we’re adding a whole new country to risk nuclear war with just because Nancy Pelosi’s too fucking old to care if she gets shot down over Taiwan.

So it looks like Ukraine has begun using US-made weapons to strike Russian territory. At a time when dangerous escalations between nuclear superpowers is an almost daily occurrence, this one stands head and shoulders above most of the others and deserves special attention. There are many, many potential scenarios which could spark a nuclear exchange, but the US/Ukraine/NATO alliance continually pursuing a line of attack into Russia is by far the most surefire way to get there. Let’s hope that option remains off the table.

Western powers aren’t censoring Russian media to protect our minds from Russian propaganda, they are censoring Russian media because it interferes with western propaganda.

If we were being told the truth about this war there wouldn’t be such a wildly unprecedented push to censor, intimidate, troll and silence anyone who asks if we’re being lied to.

People who are ideologically prohibited from seeing capitalism as the obvious source of society’s ills are forced to make up other things to blame those ills on like elite pedovore cabals, Jews, immigrants, the LGBT community, and Satan.

Vastly outnumbering your rulers but choosing not to overthrow them because you think the status quo might someday make you wealthy is the same as having all the power in the world and trading it away for a lottery ticket.

Love so hard it terrifies you.

Keep writing poetry after your twenties.

Dismiss anyone who tells you to get thick skin.

Master the art of seeing beauty in each moment.

Find enough inner stability to let life destroy you.

Learn that it’s safe to let go: there’s nowhere to fall to.

Steven Monacelli on How Communities in Texas Are Mobilizing Against Rising Far-Right and Anti-LGBTQ+ Forces

On this episode of the It’s Going Down podcast, we speak with journalist Steven Monacelli of Protean Magazine on how communities across so-called Texas are mobilizing in the face of increasing far-Right violence and harassment.

During our discussion, Steven talks about how far-Right grifters act as online megaphones for the wider movement, finding targets that groups on the street rally against, which then in turn produces content that airs on Fox News. We talk about how various communities are responding to these threats with a variety of tactics and strategies.

We also touch on the far-Right turn within the GOP of Texas, self-described “Christian fascists,” the massive impact on the Uvalde shooting, and much more.

Statement of Solidarity With Anarchist Hunger Striker Giannis Michailidis

Statement in solidarity with Greek anarchist political prisoners and hunger-striker, Giannis Michailidis.

The Florida Youth Liberation Front stands in full solidarity with anarchist political prisoner Giannis Michailidis, whose hunger strike for freedom from indefinite imprisonment by the Greek state has now reached a milestone of 67 days. Our message to comrades in Greece and Michailidis himself: we stand in solidarity with the struggle for freedom in territories dominated by the Greek state, and will continue to act in solidarity with this liberatory movement.

Giannis Michailidis is an anarchist insurgent who has served about 50% of his sentence and has obtained parole, having found employment outside the prison walls and seeking the ability to study. In order to prevent him from having the most basic degree of dignity while his neck remains under the boot of the state, the Greek government has framed Michailidis with new charges to keep him in a state of indefinite detention.

Such an obvious injustice has prompted Michailidis to engage in more aggressive messaging to demand his release from indefinite detention via a hunger strike, which he has now endured for 2 months and 6 days. We encourage any anarchists and anti-capitalists reading this to act on their own or in a group in solidarity with Michailidis’ struggle for freedom and liberation from the state.

China Is Issuing The Same “Red Line” Warnings About Taiwan That Russia Issued About Ukraine

Listen to a reading of this article:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has continued to pour gasoline on the foreign policy dumpster fire that is her planned visit to Taiwan next month, now reportedly encouraging other members of congress to come along for the ride.

“Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has invited a small group of lawmakers on her official trip to Taiwan, including the top Democrat and Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee,” NBC News reports.

This trip, which Beijing perceives as an egregious transgression of Washington’s longstanding one-China policy, is already so incendiary that the Pentagon is now planning to send in fighter jets and other war machinery to protect Pelosi’s plane in case of attacks by the Chinese military.

AP reports:

While U.S. officials say they have little fear that Beijing would attack the U.S. House speaker’s plane, they are aware that a mishap, misstep or misunderstanding could endanger her safety. So the Pentagon is developing plans for any contingency.

Officials told The Associated Press that if Pelosi goes to Taiwan — still an uncertainty — the military would increase its movement of forces and assets in the Indo-Pacific region. They declined to provide details, but said that fighter jets, ships, surveillance assets and other military systems would likely be used to provide overlapping rings of protection for her flight to Taiwan and any time on the ground there.

This risk alone would be reason enough to cancel the trip, but adding to the concern is the fact that the Chinese government has begun warning against it using the same “red line” language that Russia was using in the lead-up to its invasion of Ukraine.

“We have repeatedly made clear our our firm opposition to Speaker Pelosi’s potential visit to Taiwan. If the US side insists on making the visit and challenges China’s red line, it will be met with resolute countermeasures,” China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijiang said Wednesday. “The U.S. must assume full responsibility for any serious consequence arising thereof.”

China has been using this same language since news first broke about Pelosi’s planned trip, with Chinese state media Global Times saying last week that “visiting Taiwan is definitely a red line that Pelosi must never cross.”

During the lead-up to the invasion of Ukraine, Russia was issuing similar warnings using the same phrase. Putin warned over and over again that the west was taking Moscow’s “red lines” on Ukrainian neutrality too lightly, and Washington brazenly dismissed those warnings while continuing to float the possibility of future NATO membership for Ukraine.

“I don’t accept anybody’s red lines,” President Biden told the press in December of last year when asked about the warnings.

Weeks later Putin made good on his threat, launching a horrific war that has killed thousands and which could easily have been prevented with a few low-cost concessions.

“This is that red line that I talked about multiple times,” Putin said. “They have crossed it.”

Was it worth it?

Of course not.

Failing to learn from history is one thing; failing to learn even from the last five months is quite another. Pelosi and whoever’s orchestrating her trip should abort those plans immediately, because the dangers that are being toyed with here are not worth the moral victory of being able to say that China didn’t make you swerve in the stupidest game of “chicken” that has ever been played.

And that’s exactly what’s happening here. China’s “red line” warnings make it clear that Pelosi landing in Taiwan will at best kick up brinkmanship between the two nations another notch, while Republicans are aggressively pushing the narrative that if the trip doesn’t happen it will mean that “Communist China is winning.” The political pressure is on the side of escalation, with even progressive Democrats supporting Pelosi’s move and calls for de-escalation and detente becoming increasingly relegated to the sidelines.

We shouldn’t have to deal with this. We shouldn’t be watching a whole new country added to the potential flashpoints for nuclear armageddon just because some octogenarian in congress is too old to care if her plane gets shot down. We shouldn’t be risking another deadly conflict which stands to benefit no ordinary person over what amounts to nothing more than petty egoic chest-pounding.

We shouldn’t have to hope that the world’s most powerful people don’t take some idiotic risks for no good reason which could hurt us all or even end up getting us all killed. We should not have systems in place which can allow the worst things imaginable to happen if the tyrants who rule over us don’t happen to make the wisest decision on any given day.

Our futures shouldn’t depend upon the better angels of the worst monsters. Those with power have far too much of it, and the ordinary people of this world have not nearly enough.

Anarchists Confront Far-Right and TERF Coalition in DC

Action report on counter-protest against far-Right and TERF coalition in DC. Originally posted to FTP Distro.

We were about 25-30 people deep that day, armed only with whistles, pots and pans, tranarchy flags, protest signs and one (surprisingly loud) bullhorn. The transphobic coalition that converged on June 23rd , ostensibly for the 50th anniversary of Title IX, was a mix of far-Right wing christofascists and TERFs. The groups involved were Independent Women’s Voice, WoLF (Women’s Liberation Front), WDI USA, Concerned Women For America, Independent Women’s Network, Independent Women’s Law Center, Family Research Council, Save Women’s Sports, Alliance Defending Freedom, The Heritage Foundation, Young Women For America, and the Independent Women’s Forum.

Both WDI USA and WoLF were the TERF bloc of the coalition. The other remaining groups were far-Right christofascists. Our group met nearby early on at 10:30 AM to counter-protest as soon as they began speaking. They were set up on the western half of the plaza under a large set of canopies with their own sound system and podium. We got as close as we possibly could without being detained by the police. The park police were aggressive and they kept their distance while we sustained our noise demo against them. They told us that we would be detained if we did not move. Unfortunately while we were certainly loud enough to distract and disrupt their rally, we did not have the numbers to overtake the police and private security that day.

Our side grappled with our own apprehensions during our planning stage about the optics of physically confronting the TERFs, even though in any other circumstance we would justifiably call these people Nazis. The content of their speeches can be found on right-wing media outlets, who had their own journalists present. Their rhetoric and tone was explicitly exterminationist. This was not a rally merely about transgender people participating in sports; it was about transgender people existing in society. Their rhetoric was also explicitly right-wing, and most of the coalition had no pretense about radical feminism. Members of both blocs of the coalition tried to confront us with their phones in hand to record us. Although none of us answered their pointed questions, someone else came prepared with a printout explaining our action (this was also handed to right-wing journalists). We did the noise demo for the entire length of their hateful rally without any arrests.

Our action was planned last-minute (literally the week of the event). If we had had more time, we may have been able to reach out to larger networks of people and fully confront the event to prevent it from even happening (maybe even in bloc attire).

SCOTUS killed Roe the very next day, and fittingly, many of the groups present at this rally were major think tanks that push for anti-abortion laws.

Dan Baker Statement in Support of Pushing Down the Walls

Anarchist and antifascist prisoner Dan Baker addresses an upcoming event in support of political prisoners. For more info on Dan Baker and how to support him, go here.

The United $tates of AmeriKKKa is a white supremacist terrorist organization. Their government strives for a monopoly on violence to defend their profits, acquired through the prison industrial plantation and wage slavery. They capture political opponents, even if they don’t break laws, making examples out of political prisoners in a campaign of terror and subjugation. Anyone who stands up for human rights, women’s liberation, animals or the environment is a potential, if not eventual political prisoner. This government no longer represents the interests of the people of North America, or the world and they never did. It is vital that we, a global community, train to fight and win our freedom.

I’m known as a militant personality, I’ve been training and fighting my whole life, and I still get my ass kicked when I fight big people. If we want liberation, lives worth living, we need to be strong, healthy and coordinated as a family that defends itself from extinction and humiliation at the hands of violent fascists, racists and dogmatic fanatics. They are working daily to out shoot you, run you down and beat you to death. Whoever works harder will win that fight. Join ABCF-OC on September 18th 2022 to train together and help support Political Prisoners. We need you!

The Phoniest, Most PR-Intensive War Of All Time

Listen to a reading of this article:

The president and first lady of Ukraine have posed for a romantic photoshoot with Vogue magazine, wherein President Volodymyr Zelensky waxes poetical about his love for his darling wife.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: how is Zelensky making time for a Vogue photoshoot amidst his busy schedule of PR appearances for other major western institutions?

I mean this is after all the same Volodymyr Zelensky who has been so busy making video appearances for the Grammy Awards, the Cannes Film Festival, the World Economic Forum and probably the Bilderberg group as well, and having meetings with celebrities like Ben Stiller, Sean Penn, and Bono and the Edge from U2. It’s as busy a PR tour as he could possibly have without having a discussion about the strategic importance of long-range artillery with Elmo on Sesame Street.

Oh yeah, and also isn’t there like a war or something happening in Ukraine? You’d think he’d probably be somewhat busy with that too.

Call me crazy, but I’m beginning to suspect that there might be a concerted effort to manipulate the way we think about the war in Ukraine. In fact, I’d even go so far as to say it’s the most aggressively perception-managed war we’ve ever experienced.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February we have not only been smashed with mass media propaganda unlike anything we’ve ever seen while Russian media are purged from the airwaves, we’re also seeing the new media element of unprecedented amounts of online censorship, algorithm-boosted propaganda, and social media trolling.

So we’ve literally never seen this much overall effort put into manipulating the way the public thinks about a war. Which makes sense, given that it’s a profoundly dangerous proxy war which stands to benefit ordinary people in no way, shape or form.

I mean, can you imagine if people were allowed to just think their own thoughts about their government’s economic warfare against Russia which is hurting them financially and pushing millions toward starvation with the full awareness and approval of the US government? Or if Americans were allowed to wonder if the billions they are pouring into this proxy conflict could be better spent at home? Or if people started objecting to a needless conflict for geostrategic domination threatening their lives and the lives of everyone they know with the risk of nuclear annihilation?

Can’t have that.

There is a night-and-day difference between wanting to tell people the truth about something and wanting to manipulate their perception of something. There are times when true facts can be used to influence people’s perception one way or the other, but if your agenda is to manipulate perception rather than tell the truth you will necessarily be forced to rely on lies, half-truths, distortion, and lies by omission wherever the truth doesn’t serve that agenda.

If they were telling us the truth about this war, they wouldn’t be censoring Russian media. They wouldn’t be censoring online voices who disagree with the official narratives about Ukraine. They wouldn’t be continually blasting us in the face with mass media perception management, and they sure as hell wouldn’t be putting Ukraine’s celebrity-in-chief on the cover of Vogue magazine.

We are being manipulated, and we are being deceived. And we are being manipulated and deceived because our perceiving clearly on our own would go against the interests of the empire. They are lying to us because the interests of the people and the interests of the empire are, as usual, squarely at odds.

Canadian Tire Fire #41: Radical Pride, Worker Solidarity, CGL Resistance Continues, Anti-Homeless Violence, and Upcoming Anarchist Events

In the time since our last issue, there have been many events to celebrate and many others to fuel our continued resistance. In this issue we’ve got details and dates for three upcoming anarchist bookfairs, in Montreal, Halifax, and Victoria. We bring you more updates from the Naujawan Solidarity Network, which continues to consistently bring out large numbers to fight wage theft in Toronto. We bring you a summary of an alternative Pride event in Hamilton, as well as a sex worker justice rally in the same city. We also bring you news of several anti-homeless initiatives and incidences of violence that have taken place recently. We also provide a short update on continuing repression against land defenders on Gidimt’en territory.

In Kitchener this month, a group of anonymous environmentalists let out the air in the tires of over 30 SUVs around town. Each vehicle was left with a note that read “your gas guzzler kills.”

We’d be remiss not to mention that July 19th marked 2 years since Haudenosaunee land defenders and their supporters re-occupied 1492 Land Back Lane, successfully getting the McKenzie Meadows settler housing development cancelled. Love and solidarity to the land defenders who have, for the past two years, been faced with police violence, racist politicians and media, and more. This struggle shows that wins against the colonial state are possible, so let’s keep fighting!

Finally, a reminder that we always welcome tips for stories at canadiantirefire@riseup.net!

Upcoming Anarchist Bookfairs in so-called Montreal, Halifax, and Victoria

The annual Montreal Anarchist Bookfair will be happening on August 6th and 7th. The bookfair takes place at the Georges-Vanier Cultural Centre (CCGV) (2450, rue Workman) and ii) the CÉDA (2515, rue Delisle) in Little Burgundy/St-Henri. The event will feature two days of workshops, an Art and Anarchy Banner Display, a community bike repair station, a kidz zone, and over a hundred tables of books and zines. The event is free or by donation, and is for anarchists and anyone curious about anarchism!

Some workshops and tables will be outside, while others will be indoors. You can check out the full schedule with workshop descriptions and locations here. For those who can’t attend, there will be live radio coverage of the event on Sunday on CKUT 90.3FM, you can listen online!

The 5th annual Halifax Anarchist Bookfair will be taking place on September 3rd, you can find more information, and a schedule when it’s released, at their website.

Finally, the Victoria Anarchist Bookfair just announced they will be back with an in-person bookfair on September 24 and 25. Find more information at https://victoriaanarchistbookfair.ca/.

Annual Grassy Narrows River Run Takes Place in Toronto

July 21st marked the annual Grassy Narrows River Run for mercury justice. Fifty community members and leaders traveled from Grassy Narrows to Toronto, and were joined by a few hundred people to take the streets of downtown Toronto. They had three demands: that Ontario and Canada compensate everyone in Grassy Narrows fairly for the mercury crisis, respect the Grassy Narrows Indigenous Protected Area (end mining and logging plans in Grassy Narrows territory), and support Grassy Narrows in restoring their community and way of life from the damage that mercury has done.

The march included a stop in from of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada, where youth from the community spoke. The people of Grassy Narrows have been fighting for justice since the 60s, when 9 tonnes of mercury was dumped upstream from their community with devastating impacts on the land, water, and people of the area.

Hamilton Alternate Pride March

Earlier this month in Hamilton, following the announcement of a fully-indoor, heavily-policed official “Pride,” folks decided to take matters into their own hands. An alternate Pride march and party was planned that emphasized no cops, no commercial opportunism, and taking up space as a political act. A report back for the event read:

…a plan was made to have the kind of Pride we dreamed of: a street march and party. No cops, no bigots, nothing for sale. Just queers being loud, rowdy, and together in public. The day went as well as we could have hoped. Over a hundred people showed up in their pride best, with signs and banners, ready to take the streets. After a few speeches, we wove through downtown. Near the doors to the convention center where the indoor pride would be held, people threw up dozens of posters calling out RBC, who were tabling at the event, for bankrolling the coastal gaslink pipeline. There was music, confetti cannons, rainbow smoke bombs, a banner drop and fireworks. We ended in a park next to city hall, where DJs carried the party into the night.

Justice For Jared One Year Anniversary

July 8th marked one year since Jared Lowndes, a Wet’suwet’en man, was killed by the RCMP in Campbell River, BC. To commemorate and mourn the death of Jared and many others who have been killed by police, people drove and marched through Campbell River and gathered at the local RCMP detachment. Comrades and friends of Jared’s family shared the following report and analysis of the gathering:

On July 8th, Laura Holland, Jared’s mother, was joined by Martha Martin, Chantel Moores’s mother, the organizers from @defund604network, and community members to commemorate the beautiful life of Jared. The gathering, which was led by Laura and her Wet’suwet’en family, was powerful. So powerful it shook the Campbell River RCMP to the core as it defied their normalized genocidal colonial violence.

In a press release, the Campbell River RCMP accused the families and present members of our communities with perpetuating acts of violence against the public. The RCMP issued a statement after the protest, alleging the group blocked traffic, shouted profanities at the police, and painted on the roads. The police even tainted and painted these actions as “criminal in nature.”

However, the Campbell River RCMP and all levels of government by extension must know that we see through their ruse. Their mediocre sleight of hand is as mediocre as a colonizer is. The RCMP is merely trying to hide the execution of Jared by engaging in a racist smear campaign that paints the peaceful actions of the family and community members who showed up to express their grief and exercise their inherent right to exist on the land as violence. All this while it’s the RCMP who killed and is continuously taking countless Indigenous lives since the force was engineered by the settler state as part of its genocidal project, meant to maintain the settler colony’s genocidal extractivist and racist apartheid regime of domination, destruction and terror.

Worker Solidarity Group Confronts Wage-Stealing Businesses

The Brampton-based Naujawan Support Network (NSN), a international student and young worker-led solidarity network, has been busy again this month. On July 9th, a crowd of over 100 people assembled and marched on two businesses that owe their former workers pay. At one of the businesses, Sukh Auto, the owner and some supporters confronted the crowd, assaulting one of the protesters. The owner had previously filed a defamation lawsuit against the NSN, and threatened to have the worker deported for requesting his unpaid wages. This highlights the odds stacked against workers with precarious immigration status, especially racialized workers. In Canada, labour and immigration laws create a environment where migrant workers can easily be exploited, facing the threat of deportation if they push back against unsafe or unfair work environments.

At the July 9th demo, the NSN reported on twitter that police became involved and threatened to bring in the riot squad to arrest participants. The group held their ground, continued to protest and left on their own terms.

Criminal Charges for More Land Defenders, Coastal GasLink Resistance Continues

Earlier this month, the crown announced it will proceed with upgrading criminal charges for four more land defenders arrested last November. The four people were grabbed on the second day of raids this fall, when RCMP made it up past the Gidimt’en Checkpoint and made arrests at Coyote Camp, burning down a cabin and destroying other structures that had been lived in for months.

Sleydo’ and three others will join 15 others arrested the day before, and who previously had their charges upgraded to criminal contempt as well. An upcoming hearing on July 28th may bring more news on the repression, as CGL will “decide whether it will pursue further legal action.”

While the State continues to attempt to prevent resistance to CGL incursion on Gidimt’en territory, the clan is building a feast hall at Lamprey Creek, just across the bridge from the Gidimt’en Checkpoint. They have called for skilled builders to come help finish the project, as well as other supporters to come to camp to support the day to day functioning of camp.

Additionally, Dini ze’, Ts’ako ze’ and Sky ze’ from the Wet’suwet’en Nation will be travelling across so-called Canada in mid-August to build on relationships of solidarity with other Indigenous nations while they continue to resist CGL at home. All these efforts show that the fight against the pipeline is far from over, and that the state and industry attempts to quash resistance have not succeeded.

Hamilton Rally for Sex Workers’ Safety

Following the assault and beating of a sex worker in Hamilton last month, community members held a march and vigil to demand safety for sex workers. Dozens of people dressed in red gathered in the alleyway where the assault occurred, then took the street and marched to a recently-opened drop-in support center for sex workers. Speeches at the vigil highlighted how the criminalization of sex work puts workers at a higher risk of violence, and how sex workers cannot rely on police or the law to keep them safe. Multiple sex workers who work in the area took the megaphone during the march to lead chants and speak about their experiences and concerns. The event was organized by Sex Workers Action Program Hamilton who recently opened a new drop-in support center in the same area where the attack occurred.

Mass Shooting of People Experiencing Homelessness in Langley; Cities of Montreal and Vancouver Announce Camp Clearings

This week, it was revealed that the City of Montreal is hiring someone to oversee the dismantling of homeless camps, preparing to pay them up to 70,000$ annually to kick people out of the camps. Community organizers have already begun to sound the alarm and we look forward to hopefully hearing of resistance to this move, and solidarity with folks living in encampments.

Just as we prepare to publish this issue, we’re reading the horrible news of a targeted mass shooting of homeless people in Langley, BC. At the time of publication, two of the individuals shot have died, and one is in critical condition. Police killed the shooter at the scene. People are pointing out that less than a week ago, Joe Rogan suggested to his podcast listeners that they shoot homeless people.

The same day as the shooting in Langley, the City of Vancouver fire department announced an order to immediately remove tents and structures from Hastings Street in the downtown eastside. Citing fire safety concerns, and with empty words of sympathy for the “complex” situation, the order was endorsed by the mayor as well.

While this the Langley shooting is an extreme case, we live in a state of consistent normalization of violence against people experiencing homelessness. This violence is led by the State, who allows and perpetuates the erasure and eviction of homeless people from public space constantly. People experiencing homelessness are our friends and neighbors, and deserve care and safety.
