Vancouver, BC: Banner Drop Calls for RCMP off Wet’suewet’en Territory

Action report on banner drop in so-called Vancouver, BC in solidarity with ongoing struggle on Wet’suwet’en territory.

Early yesterday morning a banner was attached to a pedestrian overpass on Trans-(so-called)-Canada highway in xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) territory (“Vancouver”). The banner reads “RCMP GTFO OF WET’SUWET’EN TERRITORY.” The banner was securely anchored to the overpass with ropes for the safety of drivers below.

We took this action to express our solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en Nation who have been fighting against the Coastal Gaslink (CGL) pipeline. TC Energy and the canadian state intend to drill under the Wedzin Kwa, their sacred headwaters, to build a pipeline for “natural” gas that will depend on fracking. The pipeline has been called a “carbon bomb” and is part of LNG Canada’s first phase of many planned projects despite current climate collapse, and this first phase would emit four megatonnes of carbon emissions each year.  On November 18th and 19th the RCMP violently raided the homes of people in the Gidimt’en clan and violently removed them from their territory.

Our action was taken with shared and linked struggles in mind, as feminists against violence towards Indigenous women, girls, and two spirit folks, as people who need unpolluted air and water to live and don’t want to see mass ecocide!

This was a relatively easy action to take (other than some sleep deprivation) that any group of friends could replicate with a bit of scouting, some old bed sheets, ropes, fun nights painting, yummy oatmeal cookies, caffeine, and enough friends to stand as look out and to tie the banner itself.

We want to echo demands that have been shared elsewhere. The RCMP and the crown must drop all charges and conditions against anyone arrested on Wet’suwet’en territory. TC Energy must withdraw from the territory. And the RCMP must get the fuck off Wet’suwet’en yintah!

Dorsey’s Twitter Resignation Sparks Fears Of More Internet Censorship

Listen to a reading of this article:

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey has resigned as CEO of the company, leading anyone who’s been paying close attention to the rise of Silicon Valley internet censorship to voice concerns that the platform’s relatively lenient attitude toward speech compared to other major social media services may be drawing to a close.

“Hard not to see this as bad news,” tweeted Glenn Greenwald in response to Dorsey’s announcement. “I don’t think it’s been fully appreciated that on key SV issues – including decentralization, transparency and free speech – @Jack has been far better than most, and way more responsive to critiques. We’ll see what happens but it seems not great.”

“Anyone who harbors concerns that social media have already grown too intolerant of dissenting opinions—too inclined to silence viewpoints that depart from liberal orthodoxy—should be worried about Dorsey leaving,” writes Reason’s Robby Soave. “That’s because the long-serving CEO has occasionally articulated an ideological commitment to the principles of free speech; of all the tech industry pioneers who have been hauled before Congress to answer absurd questions, he was by far the most hostile to the idea that the government should serve as the internet’s speech police.”

Dorsey’s resignation comes the year after it was reported that his removal was being pursued by virulent neoconservative billionaire Paul Singer, whose Elliott Management Corp had just purchased a significant share of the company.

Twitter has been far from perfect when it comes to refraining from interfering with free expression on its platform; it just banned multiple accounts supporting the governments of Ethiopia and Eritrea against US-backed militants on what appears to be no legitimate basis mere hours ago after censoring trends in Ethiopia earlier this month, and has a longstanding pattern of censoring the speech of empire-targeted populations.

Still, Twitter has been a free speech paradise compared to other major platforms like Facebook or YouTube, largely because unlike those outlets it doesn’t tend to participate in the large-scale algorithmic suppression of unauthorized perspectives and the artificial uplifting of authorized ones.

And we are seeing some indication that that may be one of the changes we’ll see in the platform going forward. Twitter users are sharing around a 2020 quote by Dorsey’s replacement Parag Agrawal (emphasis added):

“Our role is not to be bound by the First Amendment, but our role is to serve a healthy public conversation and our moves are reflective of things that we believe lead to a healthier public conversation. The kinds of things that we do about this is, focus less on thinking about free speech, but thinking about how the times have changed. One of the changes today that we see is speech is easy on the internet. Most people can speak. Where our role is particularly emphasized is who can be heard. The scarce commodity today is attention. There’s a lot of content out there. A lot of tweets out there, not all of it gets attention, some subset of it gets attention. And so increasingly our role is moving towards how we recommend content and that sort of, is, is, a struggle that we’re working through in terms of how we make sure these recommendation systems that we’re building, how we direct people’s attention is leading to a healthy public conversation that is most participatory.”

A lot of the commentary we are seeing on this paragraph tends to focus on the bit at the beginning about having no commitment to free speech, and not nearly enough attention is going to the latter half. Agrawal’s notion that it is Twitter’s place to “recommend content” and implement “recommendation systems” sounds far too similar to YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki’s comments earlier this year when she admitted at a World Economic Forum summit that the platform had been elevating mainstream news sources on important political issues and hiding “borderline” content.

“When we deal with information, we want to make sure that the sources that we’re recommending are authoritative news, medical science, et cetera,” Wojcicki said. “And we also have created a category of more borderline content where sometimes we’ll see people looking at content that’s lower quality and borderline. And so we want to be careful about not over-recommending that. So that’s a content that stays on the platform but is not something that we’re going to recommend. And so our algorithms have definitely evolved in terms of handling all these different content types.”

This is a kind of censorship that Twitter has been relatively free from, and it is by far the worst kind. While you will routinely see Twitter posts going viral from people with peripheral political perspectives like communism or antiwar activism, you will virtually never see this occur on outlets like Facebook or Youtube because their algorithms are stacked in favor of “authoritative sources” like The New York Times and CNN which hardly ever give voice to such perspectives.

So we could soon be looking at a Twitter where communists, anarchists, conspiracy analysts, Covid skeptics, antiwar activists, supporters of empire-targeted governments, and other perspectives considered “borderline” by Silicon Valley narrative managers could receive very little visibility on people’s feeds, while authorized opinion-havers like blue-checkmark reporters from mainstream media outlets are given greater amplification.

This is the most pernicious form of internet censorship because unlike permanent bans it goes unseen and unacknowledged, and if you point out that your account isn’t getting the kind of traction it used to you can be dismissed as just paranoid and told that your content probably just hasn’t been as good lately. On a platform like Twitter where high-profile influencers tend to congregate to share ideas and information, this can lead to a dynamic where unauthorized thought becomes far more marginalized than it previously was.

It should be obvious to everyone that humanity is headed down a dark path if worldwide public speech is regulated by monopolistic oligarchs with a vested interest in preserving the status quo and a steadily increasing alignment with government institutions. If every platform people flock to in large numbers becomes subjected to iron-fisted establishment narrative management, it will greatly hinder humanity’s efforts to become a conscious species that has a truth-based relationship with the world.

Canadian Tire Fire #21: #AllOutForWedzinKwa Repression Update, Wet’suwet’en Solidarity Heats Up, Encampment Defence News

photo: @Gidimten

Following last week’s brutal 2-day raid of Gidimt’en Checkpoint and Coyote Camp, as well as several days of widespread solidarity actions in response, this week we bring you an update on the situation in Wet’suwet’en territory and the continued outpouring of support and solidarity.

We also bring you updates on encampment eviction defense in Hamilton and Vancouver.

In both of our stories this week, cops continue to do what they are meant to do: remove Indigenous people from their land to protect climate-destroying industry, settler colonialism, and white supremacy, and force poor people out of the places they can find refuge and community.

All weeks, but this week especially: fuck the police, everywhere they are, and for everything they do.

Let’s get to the news.

Encampment Defense in Hamilton and Vancouver

On November 24 in Hamilton, an early-morning fire broke out in an encampment in JC Beemer Park. The park has seen multiple rounds of encampments and encampment clearings, but community defense has also been successful at delaying the clearing of the encampment multiple times. Police and City Staff used the fire as an excuse to swiftly move in and issue eviction notices to the six residents who were still in shock from the fire that destroyed many of their belongings.

The Hamilton Encampment Support Network (HESN) was also quick to respond, joining park residents to try and fight the eviction notice and defend their belongings from seizure by the City. Over the course of the day, around 30 officers amassed in the park, along with eventually over 100 community members. At one point, supporters rushed the police line surrounding the encampment, attempting to break in and reach the residents. Two supporters were arrested over the course of the day. The presence of community members, while it did not prevent the eviction, gave park residents time to pack their belongings and access supports as they faced the challenge of needing to relocate and find a safe place to stay once again.

Two days later, while supporting another encampment being evicted, an organizer from HESN was arrested for obstruction at the encampment defense two days prior. As supporters gathered to demand her release outside the police station, three more organizers were violently arrested. All four people arrested that day were Black youth. Supporters remained outside the station until everyone was released, united in their rage against the police and an only deepened commitment to their community and each other.

In Vancouver, a rally was held on November 25th by and in support of residents of the CRAB Park encampment. The rally was held outside the offices of the Vancouver Park Board, who are currently seeking an injunction to allow them to evict park residents. There are currently about 35 tents in the park. The rally demanded a withdrawal of the request for an injunction, an end to an MOU between the Province of BC, the City of Vancouver and the Vancouver Park Board that encouraged use of force against park residents, and the consultation of unhoused people in policies impacting their safety and survival. Rally attendees heard from residents of the park, a Squamish youth, the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users, and the group Our Homes Can’t Wait.

CRAB Park residents and their friends also expressed solidarity with residents of Moccasin Flats, a tent city in Prince George, BC. A press released published by Friends of CRAB Park reads:

Last Wednesday, about a dozen people from “Moccasin Flats” tent city were offered new housing secured with support from the Prince George Friendship Centre. Their former homes were promptly bulldozed before they could collect their belongings.

Moccasin Flats has been home to about 75 unhoused people, 80% of whom are Indigenous. The camp was the subject of an injunction attempt by the City of Prince George, who sought to close the tent city along with another, smaller group of tents. In a historic decision, the courts refused the injunction, allowing the tent city to stay. But when some residents went to look at new housing last week, their remaining possessions were destroyed.

#AllOutForWedzinKwa Repression Update

Last week we covered the arrests of 32 land defenders over the course of a 2-day raid of Gidimt’en Checkpoint and Coyote Camp in Wet’suwet’en territory. Since our last issue came out, new details have emerged about the raid and the treatment of land defenders while in custody, and solidarity actions have continued unabated across the country.

After their arrests on November 18th and 19th, many of the land defenders were held over the weekend until November 22nd and 23rd. Several arrestees from the first raid day refused to sign conditions during their bail hearing on the 19th and were held along with most of those arrested on the second day. Those held over the weekend included Sleydo’, her partner Cody Merriman of the Haida nation, and Jocey Alec, the daughter of Chief Woos. Several other supporters were held over the weekend as well, including two trans women who were held in a men’s prison in Prince George.

During the bail hearings for the second batch of arrestees, considerable effort was made by the CGL lawyer to prevent Wet’suwet’en arrestees from being able to return to their territory. In particular, the CGL lawyer employed ludicrous questioning of whether Sleydo’ and Jocey were really Wet’suwet’en and thus really deserving of permission to return to their land. The judge, who, for context, is the judge that granted CGL a permanent injunction in the first place, imposed a condition on Sleydo’ that she be unable to come within 75 metres of CGL infrastructure. This is more than the 10 metres for others who received that condition.

The mainstream (and even alternative) media focus in the days following the raids was squarely on the perceived supreme injustice of the arrests of white journalists Michael Toledano and Amber Bracken. The two journalists were arrested at Coyote Camp and held over the weekend along with other land defenders. A concerted social media campaign called specifically for their release, on the grounds that they should not have been arrested because of their press credentials. Far less attention was paid to all of the other arrestees and the urgency of getting them released.

In recent days, more details about the conditions people were held in have emerged. Sleydo’ has explained that over the weekend arrestees were going at least 12 hours without access to food or water.

CBC reported that several Haudenosaunee arrestees from day one of the raid were forced to attend their bail hearing wearing underwear and shackles, and were transported there in “metal dog cages.”

The RCMP has responded to the release of footage of the raid on Coyote Camp by saying “they expected to face stiffer resistance,” as an explanation for the dramatic scenes of the raid. CBC also reported that RCMP specifically had Skyler Williams from Six Nations internally marked as “violent” and an “escape risk.” All this nonsense from the RCMP is a clear attempt to justify the dehumanizing tactics used against the arrestees, as well as retroactively justify the use of helicopters, attack dogs, chainsaws, axes, and other tools against the land defenders.

In nearby Gitxsan territory on November 21st, near the train tracks that have been the site of a solidarity presence since the raid, Denzel Sutherland-Wilson was pinned down by multiple RCMP officers. In a widely circulated video, he can be heard screaming “I can’t breathe!,” multiple times while cops are on top of him. Another person arrives and is quickly grabbed and arrested as well.

#AllOutForWedzinKwa Solidarity Actions Continue

In the shadow of and in response to this repression, an impressive array of solidarity actions have continued to sweep the country. The following is an incomplete list of actions that have taken place just over the last week!

In Hamilton, multiple actions have taken place. On November 21st, a rally and demonstration was held. Some present painted All Out For Wedzin Kwa in huge pink letters on the street. Shortly following the action, one person was arrested and charged with mischief under $5000 for their alleged participation in painting the message.

On November 23rd, the Hamilton Shell facility was shut down for 3 hours and then the blockade transformed into a demo that marched elsewhere to eventually block traffic on “all lanes of Burlington St, a key industrial access road and thoroughfare.” Despite the attempt by a red pickup truck to drive through the crowd, a communique explains that the crowd stayed calm and courageous, remembering “the courage of individuals out west as RCMP officers approached residential cabins with chainsaws and axes, jamming all radio communication devices with the song “ring around the rosie” before tearing doors open and, eventually, burning at least one cabin to the ground.”

@DefundHPS

They end their communique with the following: “It goes without saying: fuck the police, RCMP out of the Yintah, and canada out of everywhere.”

In Edmonton, a rally and march with over 100 people took place on November 22, slowing traffic through downtown.

In Ontario and Quebec, multiple rolling highway blockades were held simultaneously by Haudenosaunee on November 24th.

During the rolling blockades, train tracks are believed to have been briefly blocked near Belleville.

Rallies were held in London, ON and Waterloo, ON this week.

In Vancouver, a protest was held on November 23 outside the federal office of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada.

Then, a rail blockade was held near Renfrew skytrain station on November 24.

Source: https://ift.tt/3CX8C0Q

On November 27th in Montreal, a hundreds-strong demo took the streets in downtown Montreal. It faced a heavy riot police presence and resulted in at least two arrests but was nonetheless able to disrupt traffic for quite some time after successfully outmanouvering the cops.

Also in Montreal, a large banner reading “All Out For Wet’suwet’en was dropped over the 720 West highway.

In Eastern Quebec, the rail line leading to the large industrial port of Matane was sabotaged on the night of November 22nd. In a French language communique, the actors describe how they employed several measures to ensure that such actions would not harm people.

In southern Ontario, a coordinated nighttime solidarity action was made on rail infrastructure. A communique posted on North-Shore.Info read in part:

Using various methods we disrupted rail all over so-called southern Ontario throughout the night, hitting nearly a dozen different spots on both CN and CP rail lines. We did this in heartfelt solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en defending their Yintah from destruction, and fueled our actions with the justified rage we feel towards the RCMP and state for once against invading their territory on behalf of a private corporation.

In Thunder Bay, around 100 people held a solidarity march.

In Halifax, a solidarity event blocked a large bridge downtown.

Rallies and actions were held in Abbotsford, Nelson, Kaslo, Kelowna, and Ottawa.

On November 27th, a group of Gitxsan hereditary chiefs, matriarchs and elders delivered an eviction notice to the Hazelton office of Nathan Cullen, the NDP MLA of the riding on the territory of the Gitxsan and Wet’suwet’en. The group cites Cullen’s failure to act to prevent or respond to the RCMP actions against Wet’suwet’en and Gitxsan land defenders. According to the office of the hereditary chiefs, failure to leave would make Cullen a “trespasser, without permission” on Gitxsan land.

Rallies and solidarity actions took place worldwide including in London, UK, Winnemucca, USA, and Massachusetts, USA.

Last but not least, at the time of writing, the highway and rail blockades in Six Nations were still holding strong.

The events of the last week confirm that the fight to protect the Yintah is far from over. Let’s continue to go #AllOutForWedzinKwa!

Supporters of Wet’suwet’en Shut Down Shell Terminal in Hamilton

Action in Hamilton in solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en shuts down Shell terminal. Originally posted to North-Shore Counter-Info.

On Tuesday, November 23rd, around 7 am, about 40+ community members gathered at the gates of the Shell terminal in Hamilton located at 391 Burlington St E, blocking refuelling tankers from entering or leaving the facility.

Royal Dutch Shell is a key stakeholder in the LNG canada project, which includes an export facility in Kitimat as well as the Coastal Gas Link pipeline itself. Shell was responsible for choosing TC Energy to build and operate the pipeline, which if successfully built would transport liquid natural gas over the 670km through the unceded territory of many Indigenous Nations including the Wet’suwet’en. Hereditary leadership from all house groups have been resisting pipeline development through their Yintahs for over a decade.

New blockades have gone up these last weeks on Morice West Forest Service Rd in the territory to prevent Coastal Gaslink from drilling on Wedzin Kwa River, the headwaters that resource the entire territory and give life to its peoples and ecosystems.

Supporters took up the call of solidarity following militarized RCMP raids on Gidimt’en Checkpoint on November 18, arresting land defenders, elders, and journalists. At least 10 land defenders remain in custody, facing conditions proposed by Coastal Gaslink that would bar them from freely accessing Wet’suwet’en lands that they have title to or are guests on.

During the morning, supporters learned that fuel trucks trapped in the facility were carrying fuel addressed to a Brantford facility out of diesel, further impacting industry and causing economic damage.

Around 10 am, the crowd moved from the Shell terminal gates to take the street and shut all lanes of Burlington St, a key industrial access road and thoroughfare. The disruption brought all traffic to a standstill. We were not moved, even when two individuals attempted to drive a red pick up truck – Alberta license plate EVZ 546 – through our line. Together we refused to be intimidated, thinking of eachother’s safety and the strength shown by the Wet’suwet’en in the face of intimidation from members of the RCMP and CGL employees. Of particular note, we remember the courage of individuals out west as RCMP officers approached residential cabins with chainsaws and axes, jamming all radio communication devices with the song “ring around the rosie” before tearing doors open and, eventually, burning at least one cabin to the ground.

Hamilton police met the attempt by Albertans to drive through us in an unsurprising placid manner.

We take this instance as yet one more reminder that we keep us safe, and that the violence against Indigenous people and their allies is sanctioned by the state and its agents – including Hamilton police and RCMP – against resistance to the colonial project of canada. A couple could gleefully drive their vehicle into a crowd of people in front of state agents and freely go home, while Indigenous land defenders are currently being detained and barred from accessing their lands. It goes without saying: fuck the police, RCMP out of the Yintah, and canada out of everywhere.

Hundreds Take to the Streets in Montreal in Solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en

Action report on march in solidarity with Wet’suwet’en struggle in so-called Montreal. Originally posted to Montreal Counter-Info.

This November 27th, 2021, the Convergence des luttes anticapitalistes (CLAC) called for a demonstration in front of the RCMP offices near the Atwater metro in solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en people. This call was supported by over twenty Montreal organizations. Thus, despite the cold and the huge police presence, there were more than 750 demonstrators who responded to the call with breathtaking energy, allowing to defend the right to protest in the face of an out of proportion police force.

Marlene Hale and Eve Saint, two Wet’suwet’en activists, gave speeches at the beginning of the demonstration, both highlighting the violence of RCMP interventions they have witnessed for years on their Yintah. Marlene Hale’s brother and his wife, both Wet’suwet’en elders, were arrested on November 18th during an RCMP raid in the Yintah. The two elders had to be sent to hospital because the RCMP confiscated their medication. Eve Saint, who was arrested in 2020 during the police raid that shut down the Canadian economy for several weeks, saw her sister victimized earlier this week and criminalized for defending her territory. The criminalization of indigenous people claiming territorial sovereignty must stop. Nothing else can be expected from a colonial state that lives only on mining, both here and abroad.

As usual, the CLAC deplores the brutality of the SPVM, which has once again beaten protesters, used pepper spray and made baseless arrests. The SPVM also systematically blocked the streets leading to the ultra-rich Westmount neighborhood, forcing us to change our route several times. The slogan “The police, at the service of the rich and the fascists,” chanted repeatedly, took on its full meaning. The message of the SPVM is clear: it will do everything it can to prevent us from defending the land and put an end to these colonial pipelines. One more reason to get rid of the police! Down with the SPVM! Fortunately, despite all the attempts of the police to prevent us from going north, then south, then east, the demonstrators managed to repeatedly thwart the police lines. As usual, without the efforts of each and every one of you, the police would have been able to maintain political control over the authorized demonstrations, and for that we warmly thank you.

The call of the CLAC to take to the streets on November 27th was in response to the many calls from the various Wet’suwet’en clans — including the Gidimt’en clan — for anyone who could not come to support the Wet’suwet’en locally to organize solidarity actions from coast to coast.

Since the violent arrests in the Yintah, many indigenous and non-indigenous communities have held demonstrations, blockades of railroads, bridges and ports to demand the removal of the RCMP and Coastal GasLink from Wet’suwet’en territory. Today, the CLAC and all the organizations endorsing the protest have joined our voices to theirs. Solidarity actions will continue as long as the RCMP and CGL continue to illegally occupy Wet’suwet’en territory.

Solidarity with the people who resist! Down with the colonial state! The struggle has just begun! The pipelines will not pass!

PS: A message sent to us from @landbackskyler of 1492 LandBackLane to all the people who are currently organizing in solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en. Listen to the end!

The Struggle Continues

Humanity Is Still Trying To Be Born

Listen to a reading of this article:

Things are fucked. That’s our current situation in a nutshell.

In a slightly bigger nutshell, things are fucked because powerful people are making them fucked, and they won’t stop making things fucked unless ordinary people use their superior numbers to make them stop, but ordinary people are being psychologically manipulated away from making them stop by propaganda.

This is happening in countless ways, both on a global scale and on national scales around the world, and on pretty much any other scale you want to break the collective humaning fractal down to.

On a global scale we’re seeing it in the way our biosphere is being destroyed due to human behavior driven by the reckless pursuit of profit for its own sake. In the way US warmongering is leading to a final confrontation between Russia and China that could easily end all life on Earth. In the way increasingly authoritarian agendas are being rolled out by ruling power structures to exert greater and greater control of populations. In the way oppressive and exploitative status quo political systems are held in place in supposedly free societies despite the glaring mountains of evidence that those systems do not serve the interests of ordinary people.

All of these dire realities are manipulated, distorted, re-framed or simply omitted by the sources which people have been trained to look to for information about the world. As long as we’re successfully manipulated away from forming a clear picture of what’s going on, things will remain fucked.

People are going to have to find a way to get around this if we’re to move toward health, which means we’re going to have to fundamentally alter how we operate as a species. We’re going to have to collectively find ways to protect our minds from being herded toward untruth and find ways of making our way toward truth. If we succeed in doing this, it will be a first for us since this whole civilization mess started.

More than this, in order to have a healthy world we’re going to have to actually transcend our own egoic patterning. Overthrowing our oppressors is only the first boss fight in the very first level of the video game. It won’t be enough to simply remove the systems which enable our oppression, because if we do that without also expunging the forces within ourselves which gave rise to them we’ll just wind up creating more oppressive systems.

To have a healthy world we’re going to have to metamorphose into a species which is not driven by fear and greed and us-versus-them othering. Which doesn’t see my own suffering as meaningfully separate from the suffering of my neighbor. Which doesn’t see the struggles of a population on the other side of the planet as meaningfully separate from the struggles of the population on this side of the planet. Where we collaborate with each other and our ecosystem instead of competing and killing and exploiting and destroying.

This is the humanity that’s trying to be born.

There’s a whole, whole lot of future ahead, and if we play our cards right we’re going to get to be a part of it. If we survive to see that future, humans will look back upon the stretch of history as we know it today as a kind of embryonic stage in our development. Where an animal species not unlike any other evolved a lot of brain mass in a fairly short time but still hadn’t shed the fear-based kill-or-be-killed survival impulses of its evolutionary ancestors, so there was a confused, chaotic transition phase between animal life and true humanity.

That’s what we are working toward. Modern humans with their current brain structure have only been around for somewhere between 35,000 and 100,000 years, which is less than the blink of an eye on the historical scale of the rest of life on this planet. The advent of agriculture gave rise to civilization some 12,000 years ago, in turn giving rise to civilization and the general fucked up situation we now find ourselves in.

In the yawning expanse of time that this universe has left in its lifespan, that’s nothing. And if we can make the jump and evolve beyond this awkward apes-with-hydrogen-bombs transition phase into a truly conscious species, a truly human species, we can create an amazing life together for a much, much greater expanse of time, a length of time that will make the sum total of current recorded history look like the first moments of the gestation of a fetus relative to the rest of a full-length human life span.

And we are lurching our way in that direction. Sloppily. Clumsily.

Evolution is sloppy; it’s made of death and sex and eating and mutation and environmental cataclysm. In the same way, becoming a conscious species is sloppy; it’s made of upheavals and uprisings and movements and feuds and scandals and revelations and getting it wrong and apologizing and course correcting and learning and seeing and moving closer and closer to a lucid perception of reality.

That’s what we’re really working toward, in the grand scheme of things. That’s what this game is really all about. It looks impossible right now, but that’s the way of these things: first they look impossible, then they look possible, then they look probable, then they look inevitable, then they happen, and they become what’s normal and expected.

We just gotta get past this Level One boss fight first.

A Sense Of Perspective, If You Please: Notes From The Edge Of The Narrative Matrix

The US and its allies feigned impartiality on the conflict in Ethiopia this whole time and then someone literally just recorded a Zoom conference of western diplomatic insiders casually chatting about wanting the TPLF to topple the sitting government and leaked the video.

“Should the US and its allies intervene militarily in-”

No. The answer is no. The answer is always no. As evidenced by generations of unbroken history in the modern world. How fucking hard is that?

Issues that make sense to focus on a lot:

  • Our imminent doom via nuclear war or climate collapse
  • Imperialism
  • Dystopian authoritarianism
  • Abuses of capitalism

Issues that don’t make sense to focus on a lot:

  • Electoral politics
  • Society getting “too woke”
  • Social media feuds

“Eww China has reeducation camps, can you believe that? Imagine, a program for systematically changing the thoughts people think to make them obedient. It’s so creepy and Orwellian. Can’t wait to find out what else CNN has to tell me about the world after this commercial break!”

As the US ramps up brinkmanship with Russia and China it has simultaneously upgraded its nuclear arsenal to make nuke blasts more destructive and thereby capable of eliminating an enemy’s underground warheads. This will make an enemy more likely to strike first to avoid being disarmed.

I keep tripping on how weird it is that the US empire is charging into new cold wars with two nuclear-armed nations simultaneously for the first time ever and hardly anyone seems to think humanity’s most imminent threat could be all those armageddon weapons we’ve been stockpiling. I mean, how stupid would we feel for missing that one?

“There’s no threat of nuclear war,” said the smart person. “I trust the US war machine which consistently makes the worst possible decisions in every instance to perfectly navigate a hair-trigger nuclear standoff on two fronts every hour of every day for the foreseeable future.”

People who think MAD will continually keep the world safe from nuclear armageddon (A) don’t understand the factors that are most likely to lead to nuclear war and (B) haven’t thought very hard about what the “M” and the “D” stand for.

The belief that Mutually Assured Destruction will protect us even amid reckless cold war escalations is insane. Only detente can provide safety, with the ultimate goal of complete disarmament.

The US is going to start a nuclear war with Russia or China and the online left will still be focused on the Leftist Heretic of the Day for several minutes after the first bombs hit.

FYI it doesn’t matter how correct you were about Russiagate being bullshit if you are now deep throating MSM China narratives with zero gag reflex.

FYI it’s not okay to be a grown adult at the end of the year 2021 and still believe Joe Biden is a good president.

Some people enjoy being whipped bare ass whilst receiving humiliating verbal insults. Some people enjoy publicly proclaiming that Democrats will surely do the right thing this time and getting their hopes up high that they will. Don’t kink shame.

The opinion that there should be literally no dissent anywhere at all about government Covid policies which affect everyone is one of the most bat shit insane beliefs you could possibly come up with.

Racism is a real problem that must be made conscious AND ALSO the issue is often manipulated to protect the status quo.

Climate change is real AND ALSO manipulative plutocrats are looking to benefit from it.

Covid is dangerous AND ALSO it’s being used to advance unjust agendas.

Because our brains are wired to reject any information which could threaten our worldview, it provides more cognitive ease to simply dismiss every part of any idea that might conflict with your position. But doing so distorts our perspective.

It’s gotten to the point where any time I see exciting new anti-imperialist voices emerge in left media I start inwardly cringing because I know there’s going to be a vicious hate campaign directed against them using leftist-sounding language and given leftist-looking legitimacy.

Highly effective anti-imperialist voices will always be attacked and undermined and leftists will always be manipulated into distrusting them. There will always be a reason found for doing this. And people fall for it every damn time.

All of humanity’s problems are ultimately due to ego. Ego is ultimately born of a desire for control. The desire for control is ultimately a maladaptive impulse which we’re all eventually going to have to relinquish in order to have a healthy world.

Bay Area Sees Graffiti in Solidarity With Those Displaced by UC Berkeley Development

Graffiti against UC Berkeley led evictions and displacement goes up in the bay area of California.

A post on Indybay.org, coupled with photos of graffiti stating, “Fuck the UC!,” wrote:

A small act of solidarity with those exploited, brutalized, and displaced by the University of California.

It’s unclear as to where the graffiti was written, (photo shows the front of a UC Berkeley building), but in recent months, the UC has been involved in the high profile eviction of tenants at 1921 Walnut street. According to Berkeleyside:

The remaining tenants at 1921 Walnut St. have agreed to move out, setting the stage for UC Berkeley to tear down a 112-year-old rent-controlled building so a new $300 million, 772-bed, 14-story dorm for transfer students can go up.

The Save 1921 website wrote:

1921 Walnut St. is a 112-year-old rent-controlled apartment building in downtown Berkeley. Some of us have lived here for 20+ years. UC purchased our building on July 15, 2020 and plans to evict us, destroy our homes and community, and redevelop the property for high-end student apartments and commercial space. UCB has pushed through their purchase and their plans during the covid pandemic, causing enormous stress on the tenants and hampering community engagement in the process. UCB has illegally withheld information from the tenants and the Berkeley community and was served a petition in 2021 to release documents. UCB administration led Chancellor Christ has misrepresented the situation to the UC Regents (who will vote on this project). Throughout this process, the tenants have felt harmed, intimidated, ignored and pushed around by UC Berkeley.

Another report noted:

Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguin [originally] supported the tenants. Then suddenly in July 2021, Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguin held closed-door negotiations with the University of California and surrendered 1921 Walnut St. to UC. The tenants and the community felt deeply betrayed. Without the support of the City of Berkeley, the tenants could not mount a defense.

UC Berkeley is also behind an ongoing push to demolish and destroy the historic People’s Park, which was taken over in 1969 and occupied during a series of mass riots which turned the park into an autonomous zone, often in conflict with the police, University and even the National Guard. According to Indybay.org:

For 50 years, UC administrators have schemed to take People’s Park from those who turned a dirt lot into a lush, community-focused public sanctuary. Now, UC Berkeley is on the verge of permanently destroying the park. It installed initial fencing around much of the park on January 19. On January 27, police and public works crews evicted several unhoused residents of the park. But people are beginning to resist the coming construction of a 16-story housing complex in 2022 and are calling out for greater public support. At a rally to save the park on January 29, protesters pushed down the fencing and carried much of it to Sproul Hall on UCB campus.

The fate of the park remains up in the air, with the University wanting to bulldoze the park and build student housing:

The California State Historical Resources Commission voted unanimously Friday to recommend Berkeley’s People’s Park be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The vote comes about a month after UC Berkeley approved a $312 million plan to build housing there for students and unsheltered residents. The decision to potentially list the park as a historic site would not change the outcome for the proposed development.

For those looking to save the park, the only option left may be to continue the fight began in the late 1960s.

Why Eric Adams Doesn’t Understand Anarchism – Or the NYPD

A response from the Metropolitan Anarchist Coordinating Council (MACC-NYC) to mayor-elect and former NYPD officer and Republican, Eric Adams, attacking anarchists.

Eric Adams is raising the alarm about the NYPD. In his interview this week, he pulled no punches in describing the “professionals…many of them from outside the city,” who come into New York solely to “create violence.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves, Mr. Mayor-Elect, and honestly, we were surprised to hear a former cop take on his old colleagues so accurately!
Wait. Hold on, we just got a text. Ah. It appears Adams was actually referring to “anarchists,” not cops. Our bad.

You can see why we would be confused. Over fifty percent of NYPD officers live outside of New York City – they really are out-of-towners. In contrast, we’ve had a thriving and homegrown anarchist scene here for a few hundred years, from the founding of anarchist “intentional communities” in the nineteenth century (right near Union Square!), through Emma Goldman’s residency and activism in the late 1800s, to so-called “Ferrer Schools” founded in the early 1900s, to the anarchist-affiliated squats of the 1980s, and right up to the present day. Anyone who comes to a MACC meeting (no cops, please!) will happily find fellow members from across the five boroughs. Anarchists are and always have been a thriving, vibrant part of the fabric of New York. We are real New Yorkers – certainly realer than the cops who drive in a few days a week from their Suffolk County McMansions.

Adams also, bizarrely, claimed that anarchists are “white men,” which would surely come as a shock to the many female, non-binary, Black, and brown anarchists of New York City. Come to a protest – they are as diverse as New York itself! The NYPD has only 15% Black officers in a city where one-quarter of the population is Black. Again, Adams is focused on the wrong target.
As for “professionals,” well, we anarchists don’t do this for money. Have you met an anarchist, Mr. Adams? A lot of us don’t have two pennies to rub together, and we didn’t become anarchists to get rich. Meanwhile, the NYPD enjoys salaries significantly higher than other city workers who are forced to live in our overpriced city. With overtime (which the City pays out without question), even newbie officers can make over $100,000. As Bloomberg News has put it: “Even before applying for a job, potential recruits to the New York City Police Department learn of a way to double their pay.” The highest paid cops here can pull in over $600,000 in a good year. Nice work if you can get it!

And finally, who is really “creating violence” in this City? If any anarchists have been arrested for physical assault recently, we haven’t heard about it. In contrast, in 2020 the city closed out a whopping 2,813 excessive force complaints against officers. Indeed, New York’s Attorney General is currently suing the NYPD for the violence used against protestors last year. Every week, we read a new story in the news about an officer using an illegal chokehold, or roughing someone up for recording them. And unlike anarchists, who will get arrested if they sneeze the wrong way, cops are almost never punished for their brutality.

So, Mr. Adams, who exactly are these “out of town professionals causing violence” you speak of? You seem to find it useful to blame anarchists for anything you don’t like, in a distinctly Trumpian fashion. Perhaps instead of trying to distract, confuse, and scare New Yorkers, you could address why our city has become a playground for the wealthy with the poor left to rot, and why our government has decided that police are untouchable, even for the worst abuses of power. (And also, maybe you could explain why you’re accepting private jet rides from Steve Bannon associate and crypto billionaire Brock Pierce!) Respectfully, until you understand even the first thing about anarchists or anarchism, you should decline comment, or risk again looking like a fool.

#ShutDownCanada: Banner on 720 West-Bound, Tiohtià:ke

Report on banner drop in solidarity with Wet’suwet’en struggle against Coastal Gaslink and RCMP invasion. Originally posted to Montreal Counter-Info.

This morning in Tiohtia:ke, a large banner reading “ALL OUT FOR WET’SUWET’EN” was installed on the 720 Westbound. It was insured that the banner be secured with rope and that no road signs be blocked to make sure the highway is safe for drivers.

We act in solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en Nation and Gidimt’en clan. On November 19th, 2021, RCMP violently raided unceded Gidimt’en territory, removing unarmed Indigenous women from their land at gunpoint on behalf of TC Energy’s proposed Coastal GasLink pipeline. Among other land-defenders, spokesperson Sleydo’, Corey Joyahcee Jocko, and Jocey Alec (Chief Woos’ daughter) were illegally removed from their own Cas Yah Yintah where they are protecting the sacred headwaters Wedzin Kwa. They were illegally and brutally detained for four nights and five days, where they were denied access to water and food.

These unlawful and brutal actions further prove that the C-IRG and the RCMP must be abolished. The injunction under which they act has no jurisdiction on unceded Wet’suwet’en land. It is nothing but an inadequate piece of law that has been used to violate Human Rights, Indigenous Rights, and Wet’suwet’en Law.

Reconciliation is dead. Time’s up, Canada.

We’re Sleepwalking Into Nuclear War

Every day there’s more propaganda banging the drums of war between nuclear-armed nations a little louder. Western media are churning out reports about Russia preparing to invade Ukraine any minute now and China preparing to invade Taiwan any minute now, saying the response to each is obviously to move a lot of high-powered weaponry to both of those locations, and none of them are questioning whether these allegations are true or whether those responses are wise.

This is so dangerous. This whole two-front nuclear brinkmanship game is so very, very dangerous, and they keep finding ways to make it more dangerous. And hardly anyone notices it, because the news media outlets that people look to to understand the world aren’t telling them it’s dangerous.

The only danger you’re allowed to discuss in mainstream western reporting about Russia and China is their scary aggressive expansionism, like this new Newsweek propaganda piece here. Nowhere are you allowed to question if it’s true, or to even breathe a word about the possibility of detente.

It’s official empire doctrine that the borders of Russia and China will necessarily keep expanding unless militantly held in place by The Good Guys. It’s taken as a given that those nations are essentially mindless cancers that can only metastasize to other parts of the body unless aggressively treated. At no point is it permissible to ask if perhaps we are heading in a direction that could literally end the world and if that could not be easily avoided by simply working to scale down tensions. At no point is it permissible to question if these nations might be reacting defensively to western aggressions and discuss the possibility of working toward detente.

Australian journalist John Pilger was already sounding alarms about this years ago. This article about the shocking escalations against Russia and China by western powers was written all the way back in 2016, and it’s gotten so much worse than that since then. Yet it’s still taken as a given by Serious News Reporters in the west that Russia and China are these reckless aggressors and the US is responding defensively to their aggressions.

You can tell people who freak out about Russia and China are either acting in bad faith or regurgitating propaganda because they all act like detente is not a thing. They don’t even acknowledge the existence of that concept. Many literally don’t even know the meaning of the word.

At no time does it ever even enter their minds that hey, maybe these nations might be acting defensively to blatantly imbalanced military realities like the one illustrated below, and that the sane thing to do would be to move toward de-escalation.

People think this way because they are programmed to, and they are programmed to think that way because easing off of aggressions rather than escalating them would permit the end of US planetary hegemony and a move into a multipolar world. The empire cannot tolerate such a thing.

It was established after the fall of the Soviet Union that another multipolar world must be avoided at all cost; even if it means imperiling the whole world to maintain supremacy. Easing tensions would mean ceasing to do everything you can to prevent the rise of China as a global superpower. That’s what all the hysterical shrieking about Russia and China has really been about these last few years: manufacturing consent for this aggressive campaign.

If things were permitted to take their natural course, China would rise and the US would officially move into post-primacy and we’d have a proper multipolar world. This has been deemed so undesirable that they’re willing to risk the life of every terrestrial organism to stop it.

There are no checks or balances on this insane agenda. It’s supported by all mainstream parties and all mainstream media outlets. We’re sleepwalking into nuclear war. Nobody’s awake to the danger. Not the public, not the media, and most frighteningly not the empire managers actually driving these agendas.

Efforts To Groom Us For War With China Are Getting More Forceful

If you thought western mass media have been brazenly pushy with their anti-China propaganda, wait til you see The Hill’s appalling new opinion piece titled “America must prepare for war with China over Taiwan“.

“China’s massive investment in the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) may show China is preparing to fundamentally change the status quo and preparing for possible war with the United States over Taiwan,” the piece begins. “To deter China, the United States must rapidly build up its forces in the Pacific, continue to strengthen military alliances in the region to ensure access to bases in time of conflict, and accelerate deliveries of purchased military equipment to Taiwan.”

The article goes on to narrate about Taiwan’s importance on the global chessboard and why we should all expect a full-scale invasion by Beijing quite soon, casually discusses a direct military conflict between two nuclear-armed nations like it’s no big deal, and calls on the Biden administration to “articulate to the American people why Taiwan’s defense is critical to the United States.”

Then at the very bottom of the article you get to the part that really matters: the information about the author.

David Sauer is a retired senior CIA officer who served as chief of station and deputy chief of station in multiple overseas command positions in East Asia and South Asia.

Ahh, okay.

Apparently this “retired” senior CIA officer has been spending his “retirement” churning out war propaganda articles for The Hill with titles like “The US cannot allow China to think it will abandon Taiwan” and “The next US president has a tall order: Keeping China in check“, as well as acting as an expert source for virulent anti-China propaganda rag The Epoch Times.

Would you like to know what this big brave warrior looks like? Would you like to see a picture of this mighty hero who has no fear of leading us all into a third world war?

Here he is:

Now that’s the face of a man who’d be first to volunteer for duty on the front lines in defense of what he believes in. You look at that man and can’t help but imagine him charging into Taipei bleeding red white and blue firing an M4 carbine for freedom and democracy. He’s not just talking about sending our sons and daughters into this war, no siree.

Why is it that all the worst warmongering narrative managers are always weird-looking little nerds who plainly wouldn’t know how to hold their own dicks, much less a gun? Were they bullied so bad in school that they just have to act out their pent-up aggression by helping to incinerate families in the global south over crude oil or something? What the hell is wrong with these freaks?

Anyone who supports the idea of the US and its allies entering into a third world war against a nuclear-armed nation to determine who governs an island off the Chinese mainland is an enemy of humanity. Such a war could easily kill tens of millions of people if engaged with full commitment, which could turn into billions at any time if it went nuclear. I hope Beijing never launches an unprovoked attack on Taiwan (unlikely), and I hope the US doesn’t provoke it into doing so (far more likely), but if all this brinkmanship spins out of control and that does indeed happen then entering into such a war to stop it would benefit nobody but a few sociopaths in Washington, Langley and Arlington. And quite possibly not even them.

Contrary to what propagandists like Sauer keep implying, the US is not even treaty-bound to defend Taiwan militarily and hasn’t been since 1979 when the only such treaty was annulled during Washington’s campaign to coax Beijing away from the Soviet Union. Yet because of their steadily escalating propaganda campaign, for the first time ever a majority of Americans surveyed on whether they’d support going to war with China over Taiwan now reportedly say yes

At best all these manipulations are geared toward manufacturing consent for pouring vastly increased military resources into the US empire’s ongoing pivot to Asia, which just by itself will necessarily include myriad provocations against the Chinese government which can easily escalate into war at any time. These people are playing games with the lives of every living organism on this planet, and they are suffering no consequences for doing so.

And now Moscow and Beijing are moving further into a military partnership that seems to be getting closer by the year in response to aggressions from the US and its client states, which, I dunno, I’m no historian but maybe might be cause for alarm when you’ve got world powers splitting into two increasingly hostile global alliances. Could that lead to something bad? It seems like maybe that could lead to something bad.

Cornered animals are dangerous, especially ones with fangs and claws. Dying empires are dangerous, especially ones with nuclear weapons. We’re being aggressively propagandized into consenting to insanely dangerous agendas geared toward maintaining US unipolar hegemony in defiance of the natural movement we are seeing toward a multipolar world. We are seeing signs everywhere that the drivers of empire are preparing to do some very, very crazy things in order to stop that movement and maintain their dominance. The fact that they are still ramping up their propaganda campaign is concerning, to say the least.
