Washington, D.C. — The President and CEO of the NAACP, Derrick Johnson, issued the following statement today regarding the second Impeachment of President Trump:
“As white supremacists attacked our democracy last Wednesday, the NAACP called for the immediate Impeachment of the president. After his endless and desperate attempts to overturn the certified votes of the American people, the president incited a deadly insurrection at the Capitol, threatening the lives of our lawmakers. Let me be clear: Donald Trump attempted a coup on the United States of America.
Today, following a historic vote in the House, President Trump became the only US president to ever be impeached twice. And while the NAACP is nonpartisan, we are not blind. He is a dangerous president, and the history books will reflect that. Now, the Senate must convict him swiftly.
“In just one week the nation will inaugurate Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as the next President and Vice President of the United States. The NAACP looks forward to working with the new administration to address the issues facing our people and democracy. We have a lot of work to do.”
